About
Mobility Service:

Living (dlc) provides a Mobility Service that aims to keep older people and disabled people of all ages independently mobile and help them to acheive safe driving.

The service offers:

  • Driving asessments for disabled people, and those whose needs have changed.
  • Advice about adaptations to cars, to enable people to stay mobile.
  • Assessments for powered wheelchairs and scooters, and the opportunity to try them out.
  • Passenger assessments, tailored to the needs of each disabled person and/or their carers.
  • Carer's assessments for those assisting a disabled person into a car seat.
  • The opportunity to try out adapted vehicles and equipment.
  • Impartial expert advice in order to choose the most appropriate vehicle and/or adaptations for their lifestyle.
This is a unique service in the Bristol/former Avon area.  It is based in Bristol, and offers an outreach service in Sparkford near Yeovil.  Living (dlc) Mobility Service is part of a network of nearly twenty independent organisations called the 'Forum of Mobility Centres'.

Driving Assessors are specially trained Approved Driving Instructors.  Other assessors are qualified Occupational Therapists.  Together they provide practical advice and support to older people and disabled people of all ages, who

  • Need advice about whether they can continue to drive in safety.
  • Are uncertain about the type of car adaptations they require.
  • Wish to resume driving following a change of circumstance, such as an accident or a stroke.
  • Need to be able to help disabled people in and out of cars, and to know how to load wheelchairs and other equipment safely.
We can also assist in arranging retraining where necessary.  This might be to help clients master the new controls on an adapted vehicle, or where someone has not driven for a period of time and needs a chance to familiarise themselves again with driving.

All driving assessments are conducted off road initially.  Assessment for powered wheelchairs and electric scooters are carried out both inside and outside the building on different surfaces, eg carpet, gravel, pavements etc.

Clients include direct referrals from the DVLA and Motability and self referrals from the general public.

Living (dlc) is a disabled people's organisation.

The Mobility Service is a part of Living (dlc) but is separately funded from the rest of the core service; and it has its own specialised web pages with a link in the main menu, as follows:
